Born in the woodlands of Varmland, Sweden to a Cypriot mother and Swedish
father, Thor grew up in a household filled with traditional Greek, African and
Caribbean music. In early childhood he moved with his family to New York, a city
whose cultural diversity further influenced his style and taste.
Thor added to his rich musical palette by studying classical piano, jazz guitar and
bluegrass banjo; he showed a penchant for the remix at an early age when he
couldn’t help tinkering with classical piano arrangements. His first serious foray
into the digital domain came after injuring a finger during a cooking accident:
unable to play instruments for 6 months, he picked up his laptop and began
programming beats. Before long he became a key player in Brooklyn, New
York’s underground music/art scene, and is one of the founding members of local
DJ/Producer collective Cumba Mela.
From American slave songs to modern electronic beats to shamanic chants,
there are no boundaries when it comes to Thor’s cadre of sonic inspiration. His
remixes, mash-ups, and original productions are at once both nostalgic and
cutting-edge, equally at home in either the modern super-club or the middle of
the forest.
